Study Examines AI’s Role in Generating False Memories During Witness Interrogations
A recent study at the MIT Media Lab has pinpointed a striking effect of AI on human recollections. Researchers have found that a chatbot equipped with a sophisticated language model is more likely to induce false memory formation in individuals when compared to traditional methods. This inquiry, particularly within crime witness settings, presented a notable increase in inaccurate memories which persisted for at least a week.
The examination revealed that individuals unfamiliar with chatbot technology, yet having a keen interest in crime-solving, were especially prone to accepting manufactured memories. Questions arise from these findings regarding the moral implications of utilizing such progressive artificial intelligence in critical circumstances where it can shape or distort human thoughts and memories.
